FAQ ✦

  • Electrolysis is the only FDA approved method of permanent hair removal. A tiny filament is inserted into each hair follicle and a small amount of electric current is applied, destroying the hair follicle and preventing future hair growth. Electrolysis is effective on all hair and skin types.

    • Stop tweezing/waxing at least 4 weeks prior your first appointment, then give your tweezers to a friend for the next 12-18 months so you aren’t tempted to tweeze in between treatments. :-)

    • Shaving between treatments is okay, but definitely stop shaving at least 3 days prior your appointment. In order to perform electrolysis, the hair must be long enough to grab with tweezers.

    • The hair should be 1/8 - 1/4 inch long for the most efficient treatment. Please trim, shave, or grow out the hair so that it’s 1/8 - 1/4 inches in length for your appointment.

    • Stop using retinoids and chemical exfoliants 2 weeks prior to your appointment, including tretinoin/retin-a, AHAs, BHAs, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, etc.

    • Stop taking oral retinoids (e.g. Accutane) at least 6 months prior to treatment

    • Routinely apply broad-spectrum sunscreen, SPF 30 or higher. It’s recommended to reapply every 2 hours, especially in direct sunlight

    • Stay hydrated, especially in the 24 hours prior to your appointment

    • Moisturize, especially in the 24 hours prior to your appointment. Slugging the night before treatment can make the treatment much more efficient and far more comfortable for you!

    • Avoid caffeine, alcohol and nicotine prior to your appointment

    • Get your beauty sleep the night before your appointment :-)

    • Eat a yummy meal before your appointment :-)

    • Immediately after treatment, begin routinely cleansing the treatment area with hypochlorous acid or witch hazel

    • Immediately after treatment, routinely apply pure aloe vera gel to soothe the treatment area

    • Wear loose clothing near treatment area

    • Avoid makeup and heavy creams for 24 hours, then moisturize 2x daily

    • After 24 hours, routinely apply broad-spectrum sunscreen, SPF 30 or higher

    • Minimize sun exposure for 48 hours

    • Avoid swimming/hot tubs for 48 hours

    • Avoid excessive sweating/physical activity for 48 hours

    • Avoid shaving for 48 hours

    • Avoid chemical exfoliants for 2 weeks post treatment (retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, etc.)

    • Avoid cosmetic skin treatments for 2 weeks post treatment (IPL, dermaplaning, microneedling, etc.)

    • And of course, stay hydrated. We love electrolytes

  • During laser hair removal, high-heat lasers are used to damage the hair follicle, reducing hair growth. This method is usually most effective on contrasting skin and hair colors, i.e. light skin and dark hair. While some folks experience lasting results, laser hair removal is only FDA approved to reduce hair growth.

If you are considering laser hair removal, please educate yourself on paradoxical hypertrichosis, a rare side effect which causes more hair to grow in or around treated areas.

  • If you’re new to electrolysis, we typically recommend longer treatments weekly or every other week until there is significant reduction in hair growth, then shorter, monthly treatments until the area is clear. Hair grows in 6-8 week cycles, so we recommend not going longer than 6 weeks between treatments.

With consistent treatment, most areas can be cleared within 18-24 months, though it could be quicker for small, sparse areas like the bikini line, or longer for large, dense areas like the face and neck.

  • Once the filament is inserted into the hair follicle, you will feel a quick pulse of heat when the current is applied. Most would not describe the feeling as pleasant, but some folks can tolerate it more than others. We will work together to find the most effective treatment setting within your comfort level.

The treatment will be more comfortable if you are well hydrated, well moisturized, well rested and well fed. Numbing creams, like Lovely or Zensa, can also make the treatment more tolerable.

  • When electrologists use the word ‘modality,’ we are referring to the specific method or type of electrical current used to destroy the hair follicle. Galvanic electrolysis, invented in 1875, uses direct current (DC) to create a chemical reaction that destroys the hair follicle. Thermolysis (AKA short-wave, RF, HF), invented in 1923, uses alternating current (AC) to kill the hair follicle with heat. Blend is the best of both worlds, combining DC and AC current. Flash is fast thermolysis, using high intensity heat in under .5 seconds.

At The Current, we use flash, blend, and thermolysis. We will work together to find the most effective modality for your hair type, skin type, and your comfort level.

  • Yes! About 70% of people with PCOS experience hirsutism (excessive hair growth), Electrolysis can be a highly effective treatment option for folks with PCOS, especially when the individual is working with a doctor to balance their hormones.

Please note that laser hair removal is not recommended for individuals with PCOS because the risk of paradoxical hypertrichosis is higher among PCOS patients.

  • It’s common for folks to remove hair on the face, upper lip, cheeks, chin, neck, chest, arms, stomach, back, bikini line, legs, toes, and more!

We cannot remove hair inside the nose or ears. If you would like hair removed from a mole, a doctor’s note must first be provided.
